Jakarta: Director of Saiful Mujani Research Consulting (SMRC) Sirojudin Abbas said the possibility is slim for President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to replace Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto, who recently named general chairman of the country's second largest party
Golkar.

"Considering the current political condition, that possibility is slim," Sirojudin Abbas told Antara here on Monday.

The president wants to maintain good relations with Golkar to ensure Golkar support in the Parliament for a number of his policies mainly in infrastructure development,  and in eliminating poverty, he said.

Golkar will retain the post of House Speaker left vacant by former Golkar general chairman Setya Novanto, who is arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on charge of corruption.

In addition support of Golkar is needed  in the presidential election in 2019. The president who has no control of a political party has to work extra hard.

Golkar support is necessary to reduce dependence on his own party the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). Jokowi is a PDIP cadre but he has no controlling position in the ruling party. Golkar also is also interested in maintaining good relations with the President, Sirojudin Abbas said.

Jokowi will most like reshuffle his cabinet  but Airlangga is not expected to be included among the ones to be replaced.

If Airlangga is to be replaced , Golkar will have stronger bargaining position  especially Airlangga has no problem with his integrity  and the law, Sirojudin said.

He said Jokowi's decision to keep Airlangga in the cabinet would cause no damage to the public support for his government despite his strict policy against double capacity.

At the earlier process of forming his cabinet, he made it clear that all his ministers may not keep other posts including in political party.

"I don't think it would damage his image if he hade an exception now. The public have high satisfaction with Jokowi's performance," he said.

Observers have said Jokowi would be seen as not consistent with his principle he keep Airlangga in his cabinet.

His critics and political rivals would likely capitalize on his inconsistency if Airlangga is to stay in the cabinet. (Antara)
