Jakarta: The Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) has restored around 680 thousand hectares of degraded peatland ecosystems in the past three years.

"We succeeded to restore 679,901 hectares of peatland ecosystems in the past three years," BRG chairman Nazir Foead told reporters on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

"We want to restore two million hectares of peatland ecosystems by 2020," the BRG leader added.

BRG has been active in Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and Papua. It has established networks in 272 villages.

The agency was established by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in 2016. It was created as a response for the 2015 Southeast Asian haze crisis.

The institution is directly under and responsible to the president. It is a testimony to Indonesia's commitment  to tackling forest fires.
