Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo held a meeting with Islamic clerics from Jakarta and its satellite cities at State Palace in Central Jakata on Thursday.

President Jokowi urged Islamic clerics to help tackle hoaxes on social media. He believes that religious leaders could help maintain peace and tolerance

"Your students will listen to advice. They will follow your instructions," President Jokowi said.

Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections in April 17. Voters will elect the president and lawmakers on the same day.

According to various surveys, many Indonesians get at least some news from social media. As the result, they are prone to fall for political hoaxes.

"Islamic clerics are committed to preserve national unity. We are ready to tackle hoaxes," Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Jakarta office head Zulfa Mustafa said.
