Police to Ensure Security on New Year's Eve

Jakarta: Law enforcement agencies will prepare counterterrorism measures to secure New Year celebrations.

"We will gather the most effective strategies," said the National Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal at the National Police head office on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have arrested dozens of suspected terrorists in the past few months. They have unveiled numerous terror cells in a number of regions.

"That is part of our commitment to protect Indonesian people during Christmas and New Year holidays. They can pray on Chirtsmas Day. They can enjoy New Year's Eve," he added.

Authorities have started the operation Candle 2017 to guard year-end festivities. They have deployed as many as 240 thousand pesonnel to protect various public spaces.

"The National Police is the leading agency in the security operation. The public is an important partner. The military is also a big contributor," he underlined.
