Maimoen Zubair Hints at Support for Jokowi's Re-election Bid

Jakarta: Incumbet President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo met with influential cleric Maimoen Zubair at Al Anwar Islamic Boarding School, Rembang, Central Java on Friday, February 1, 2019.

During the meeting, Maimoen hinted that he may support President Jokowi's re-election bid. However, Maimoen underlined that his students and supporters are free to choose any presidential candidate.

"He is close to me now. This is my personal decision," Maimoen said.

"I don't want to give any order. You are free to choose any candidate," Maimoen added.

Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections in April 17. Voters will elect the president and lawmakers on the same day. 

The second presidential debate will take place at Sultan Hotel in Central Jakarta on February 17.  It will focus on infrastructure, energy, agriculture, natural resources and environemnt. 

The first presidential debate debate took place at Bidakara Hotel in South Jakarta on January 17. It covered the issues of law, human rights, terrorism and corruption.
