BNPB Has Recorded 96,086 Mount Agung Evacuees: Spokesman

Metrotvnews.com, Jakarta: The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has reported that Mount Agung experienced 444 deep volcanic quakes, 329 shallow volcanic quakes and 56 tectonic quakes between midnight and 18.00 Central Indonesia Time (WITA) on Wednesday, September 27, 2017.

Authorities have evacuated as many as 96,086 residents. They have established around 430 temporary shelters.

"The number of evacuees is expected to be higher. The data is going to be updated," said BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a written statement on Wednesday, September 27, 2017.

The government has prohibited any activities in dangerous areas. It has delivered tonnes of aid in the past few days.

Mount Agung's latest eruption occured in early 1960s. The disaster killed more than 1,000 people.
