Jakarta: Incumbent President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's running mate Ma'ruf Amin strongly believes that halal industry could help boost Indonesian economy.

"One of our plans is halal industry development," Ma'ruf said here on Wednesday.

The vice presidential candidate is currently a non-active chairman of Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI). The Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) cleric is also an expert of Islamic economy and Islamic finance.

"MUI has promoted halal certification over the past 20 years," Ma'ruf stated.

Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections in April 17. Voters will elect the president and lawmakers on the same day.
