Jakarta: The Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto has allowed the Army strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) commander Lieutenant General Edy Rahmayadi to run in the 2019 North Sumatra Gubernatorial Election.

"That is his right as Indonesian citizen," he said in Central Jakarta on Thursday morning.

According to the law, a gubernatorial candidate can be only nominated by a party or a coalition of parties with at least 20 Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) seats. As of mid-December, the army general has been officially endorsed by Gerindra Party, PAN and PKS  which represent 28 DPRD seats.

"He has the same right with any civilian," he added.

The next simultaneous regional elections will be held in June 2018. It will be staged in 17 provinces, 39 cities and 115 regencies.
