"We decided to reinstate his citizenship on September 1," Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said here on Wednesday (9/7/2016).

Yasonna admitted Arcandra obtained United States (US) citizenship in 2012. According to the law, Indonesians automatically lose their Indonesian citizenship if they obtain foreign citizenship.

However, Arcandra filed a request to revoke his US citizenship on August 12, 2016. The request was granted on August 15, 2016.

"Our law doesn't recognize dual citizenship. However, our law also doesn't recognize statelessness," Yasonna continued.

Yasonna decided to reinstate Arcandra's citizenship after asking opinions from several legal experts.

President Joko Widodo discharged Archandra from his ministerial position last month. He then instructed Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to fill the role temporarily.
