Interfaith Leaders Call for Peaceful Local Elections

Indonesia will have simultaneous regional elections in February 2017. As many as 101 regions will hold local elections.

"We urge all stakeholders to exercise restraint," said Indonesian Communion of Churces (PGI) general secretary Gomar Gultom at Centre for Dialogue and Cooperation among Civilisations (CDCC) office in Jakarta on Monday (10/17).

"We also urge all citizens to avoid violence," he continued.

The meeting was attended by Inter Religion Council (IRC) chairman Din Syamsuddin, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) general secretary Anwar Abbas, Indonesian Buddhist Council (Walubi) representative Suhadi Sendjaja, Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) representative Nyoman Udayana sangging and other religious figures.

Gultom added the government should maintain security ahead of simultaneous regional elections. The authorities should resolve conflict before it escalates.
