Metrotvnews.com, Jakarta: The National Police has announced Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) is a suspect in a blasphemy case.

"We name Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as a suspect," said National Police criminal investigation division head Insp. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/16).

"We prevent  him to leave Indonesia," he continued.

Several Islamic organizations reported Ahok last month after he made comments about the Koran.

Muslim hardliners staged a mass protest earlier this month. They demanded the police to charge him for blasphemy.

The National Police then conducted a case expose on Tuesday (11/15). Ari said most experts agreed to continue the case.

Ari mentioned the police will issue investigation order letter (sprindik). They will investigate the case quickly.

The status will not affect the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. Ahok can still take part in the gubernatorial election.
