Metrotvnews.com, Jakarta: The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) chief General Gatot Nurmantyo has guaranteed the military will be neutral in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.

"I guarantee TNI will be neutral," Gatot said in Cimahi, West Java on Friday (9/23).

"A military official who wants to participate in a regional election has to resign. An active military official cannot participate in a regional election," he continued.

Previously, Democratic Party and three other political parties announced Major Inf Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono as governor nominee in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. He is the eldest son of Democratic Party chairman and former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

Democratic Party secretary general Hinca Panjaitan said Agus will resign from the military soon.
