Indonesia Welcomes New ASEAN Secretary General

Jakarta: Brunei top diplomat Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi has assumed office as the 14th  secretary general of the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). 

The transfer of office ceremony was held at the ASEAN head office this morning. The event was attended by representatives from all ASEAN member countries.

"Pak Lim is a familiar face in the ASEAN community," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.

He succeeded outgoing Secretary-General Le Luong Minh from Viet Nam. He previously served as a permanent secretary at the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He graduated from the City of London Polytechnic in 1976. He then received a Post Graduate Teacher Certificate in 1977.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN is appointed by the ASEAN Leaders for a non-renewable term of five years, selected from nationals of the ASEAN Member States based on alphabetical rotation.
