Indonesia Welcomes New UN Chief
Antonio Guterres (Photo:AFP), Jakarta: Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres has been elected as the new United Nations (UN) secretary general.

Guterres will replace Bank Ki Moon in January 2017. He will hold the position until December 2021.

"Indonesia is ready to cooperate with the new UN secretary general in maintaining peace and order in the world," said the Foreign Ministry in its website on Friday (10/14).

Guterres won against other 12 contenders. He promised to promote peace in the world.

Guterres previously led the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He held the position for 10 years.
